Ty Wilson is a Georgia personal injury attorney practicing law in the State of Georgia and our video topic for today answers the question: do personal injury attorneys handle the damage to the car?
When someone is involved in a motor vehicle collision, there are actually two claims. There is a property damage claim. This is the actual damage to the vehicle and all property associated in that vehicle. There may also be a bodily injury claim if you’re hurt.
Some claims are property damage claims only and that means that no one got hurt in that collision. However, if you have two claims it’s important that you speak with an attorney. There are many attorneys who do not handle property damage. If you have both types of claims, you want to hire an attorney who can, and will, handle both of them for you.
Finding the Right Attorney
You can search online or reach out to people you know for lawyers in your area but it’s important that you contact the prospective lawyer as soon as you can after your accident. Here is what you are looking for in an attorney.
- Does the attorney respond back to you in a timely fashion after your first contact? This is important because auto claims can take a bit of time to work out with the insurance company depending on your injuries, type of accident and more. You want to be sure to have an attorney who communicates with you during the entire process.
- Does the attorney handle personal injuries AND auto accidents arising from a car accident? Ultimately you want someone who can work on both.
- Does the attorney have experience in these types of claims? Critically important because you want someone who knows the ropes, so to speak, and can navigate delays, set up settlements if needed and get you the most you can receive, both for your auto replacement or repair and for your own bodily injuries.
- Is the attorney in your state/area? The attorney must be practicing in your state to help you. Although many firms state that they are practicing all over the country, you want someone who knows your state practices and can apply the law there to your advantage.
